Damascene steel - for use in knives and decorative applications

Pattern forging was developed by smiths during the Iron Age and Merovingian, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking periods. Damascene steels consist of two different steel grades, welded in over a hundred layers. After etching, one of the steel grades turns dark and a beautiful pattern appears on the surface. The terminology from the Middle Ages hints at the decorative and also magic meanings Damascene patterns may have. "Devil´s eye" and "Muhammed´s ladder" are two basic patterns from that time.
