Damascene steel - for use in knives and decorative applications

Pattern forging was developed by smiths during the Iron Age and Merovingian, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking periods. Damascene steels consist of two different steel grades, welded in over a hundred layers. After etching, one of the steel grades turns dark and a beautiful pattern appears on the surface. The terminology from the Middle Ages hints at the decorative and also magic meanings Damascene patterns may have. "Devilīs eye" and "Ladder" are two basic patterns from that time.
