Pattern Forging

A laminated pattern is just linear. During the forging to a flat dimension, some irregularities are created depending on the power of the hammerblows and the feed steps. The irregularities look like randomly distributed waves in the linear pattern. That pattern is called "Random". If we want to make a more predictable pattern, we can use three methods:
Torsion Twisting, Pattern Coining or Pattern Cutting.

Torsion Twisting

A laminated bar is heated and torsion twisted. After forging to a flat dimension and grinding to a knife blade, an attractive spiral pattern is visible after etching.

Pattern Coining

A pattern is coined in a laminated flat dimension. The coining can be made by hand or by coining tools in a forging press. The surfaces are ground and etched. In the surface a characteristic pattern appears.

Pattern Cutting

A pattern is cut (here with an anglegrinder) in the surface of a laminated flat bar. This bar is forged or rolled flat again. After grinding and etching a characteristic copy of the cut pattern is shown on the surface. Using this method, details like company logos etc. can be added to the pattern.
